I seem, for today at least, to have access to my LJ friends’ page at work. Oh, how I’ve missed you all – it’s just not the same reading through everything in one long lump on an evening, when I’m too tired to care. I like to read my friends’ page then too, to be sure, but largely to catch up on my lunchtime reading.

There’re quite a lot of you and some are very prolific.

Anyway, let’s hope that I manage to retain access (mental note to nip off and see if Hotmail works in the Brave New World).

This post is mainly to highlight that fact.

To try and make it additionally interesting, we had a chap come around last night to give us a quote for moving our stuff when we jump ship to join the Ilford Massive. He said, and I quote, “Wow. You have a lot of books!” Mate, you should have seen them a) before the move from Clapham, b) after Furtle’s collection had been added to mine and c) in the pre-cull period before the move from The Athenaeum.

I guess from his reaction that anything more than a couple of paperbacks is unusual.

Not for my friends and me, it isn’t. We at the Carpathia are rank amateurs compared with some of our chums in the home library field.

Alas, I gather that we now live in a society in which most people read just the text on a computer screen, if anything. Ask any novelist or journalist.

Waaaay back in the 1980s we were going to move and we packed up the books. We had lots of boxes that were 30" x 24" x 18" and we had filled 14 of them before we decided that we wouldn't be moving. I think we still had at least one more bookshelf to empty at the time. I have since had a really stringent cull - bookcrossing is marvellous and now have only those books that will be useful for information. all fiction gets moved on.
