I see from the news that there’s been an earthquake in Cumbria. Something like 3.6 on the Richter scale. My limited understanding of these things suggests that granny’s dentures may have rattled in their bedside glass, a couple of Christmas cards might have fallen from the mantle and some dust was dislodged from the top of the wardrobe.

Insurance companies are thought to be gearing themselves up for a quiet Christmas.

In other news, the zebra crossing on Abbey Road in St John’s Wood, immortalised on The Beatles’ 1969 album cover has been given grade II listed status. This honour is not something that should be just trampled on… er…

It's Cumbria, they're made of tough stuff, the Cumbrians.

Someone probably just accidentally thumped the ground.

It's my understanding that the zebra crossing on the front cover of Abbey Road was covered over long ago, and that people are taking pictures of each other on one that's further along the street. It's rather like blues nuts in Mississippi taking photos of each other on the site of the juke joint in which Robert Johnson was poisoned, only to later discover that it was miles away.

Imagine my surprise, one day almost thirty years ago, to walk around a corner in London's West End and find myself looking at the street on the Ziggy Stardust cover. A lovely moment.

I think it's the same crossing, but couldn't prove iot. It would be a bit odd (but strangely typical) if they listed the wrong one!

I don't suppose you remember where the Ziggy cover was done? I'm guessing somewhere near Denmark Street where all the guitar shops are. I believe a young David Jones lived in a second hand ambulance parked there in his pre-Bowie days.

In fact, Wikipedia (fantastic!) tells me it was outside 23 Heddon Street, London, W1.

Yes, Heddon St, near Piccadilly Circus, and the same website says that the current Abbey Rd zebra crossing is at "almost exactly" the same spot as the original. I thought it was a bit further down the street, as people who photograph each other crossing it have been ridiculed since it was moved.
