I thought I ought to record, largely for my own benefit, the fact that England trounced Australia to retain the Ashes for the first time in 24 years.

I know that the team technically did so in the fourth Test in Melbourne, but to win the fifth and final match by an innings and 83 runs in Sydney is rather special.

I am among the first to grumble when it all goes wrong, so here is me recording the fact it all went horribly right!

The scorecard.

I still don't fully understand cricket but I love that it exists and being better than Australia for a change is lovely too.

The locals in my office are all strangely quiet on the subject, a considerable change from a couple of weeks ago, when Australia won the Perth test.

Go England! Who'd have thought it would happen more than once in my lifetime?

Rather fine, yes.

I gather the Aussies are now bigging up their women's cricket team, which is also rather fine.

Splendid! My beau and I have been watching the highlights each evening. I still don't understand it, I just like the feel of winning!
