I don’t feel quite right. Not actually ill, but that may be on its way, I fear.

Furtle was off work for two days, but I thought that I’d dodged the bullet. Now I’m not so sure. I am hot and congested and to add to the misery, my ears seem to be blocked, making everything sound dull and bassy; a little like listening under water, but with slight reverb. The trebles are muted and someone has pumped up the bass. In the office it’s not so bad, but in the street, when anything drives past – but lorries and buses in particular – it is very loud on the lower end. I dursent like it.

Ironically last night before I left work, I was discussing music with a colleague and we were talking about headphones and such, particularly the fashion for brain bleedingly loud but tinny squawks from ear pieces or even phone hand sets. I pointed out that although my eyesight is not quite the 20-20 it was a few years ago and that while I shall never run a four minute mile (or indeed a mile at any speed), my ears were holding up remarkably well (I can still hear most frequencies that are supposed to be lost to you once you get much past the age of 20). Today that seems to be an empty boast.

Still. I have a latté.
