I saw this in today's Metro and to be frank, I wasn't sure whether it was a joke or not, the Olympic mascot, Wenlock, dressed as a London Bobby:

I wondered if was it just me, or whether there really is something vaguely unsettling about the baleful glare of the unblinking eye? Rather than it being a piece of fun memorabilia, it somehow encapsulates the darker side of the organisation behind the Olympics, the one that is enforcing bizarre strictures on advertising, trading and dress codes.

I think it's brilliant, but not for any of the reasons that I suspect were in the minds of the designers...

It is available on Amazon, here: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Olympic-Mascots-Wenlock-Policeman-Figurine/dp/B005HP1UHK/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top

Take five minutes out to read the reviews. It seems that I needn't have worried; other people think it's freaky, too. I am so tempted to get one, either this, or can you believe, there's a plush variant..?

Want one.

Though at 11 quid I might wait until they start turning up in remaindered shops ...

Terrifying. I cannot imagine what was in the designers' minds when they dreamed up mutant Wenlock and his grotesque comrade Mandeville. What made them think these were a good idea? Still, my horror of them is almost balanced by the ten minutes of quality amusement I've just had reading those reviews.

It was no surprise when Pride, the cute red, white and blue maned British lion, made his unthreatening entrance to the mascot scene a little late.

I think the marketing and memorabilia for Team GB is far, far superior to anything that simply represents Olympics 2012. Everything about it looks cheap and tawdry, which when you consider how much has been spent...

Surely, if it can be done at all, it can be done by Mr Crowther...
