Well, after last night's heat induced sleep deprivation debacle, I have planned tonight with comparative care.

It's still hot, but not as hot as last night. Nowhere as near. I have had a nice refreshing shower and I am typing this with a cup of chocolaty Ovaltine next to the keyboard (Pass me my pipe and slippers, Rover). I have eschewed anything even vaguely caffeinated since about 8pm (normally I'd be guzzling coffee right up to and past midnight), so I am hopeful that I shall be able to doze off in comparatively short order. A breeze would be nice, for the second night on the trot, the air is completely still and tranquil. It does nothing to dispel the trapped heat, which is inconvenient, to say the least. Nonetheless...

And now a word of advice.

It is a poor idea to phone a friend and leave a message asking them to phone back when you are just about to take a shower. You know it, I know it. I did anyway. And yes, the phone rang while I was in the shower. Some things will always be dependable. Oh happy day.

In the meantime, I am now bone-achingly tired. One last ciggy, I think, and then bed. Before 1 am is dead early for me.

You need to buy one of those big box fans!! Also.. Why is it so hot? Do you not have A/C? My Jessica is in Sweden and they do not have A/C there.

As a rule no, we don't have A/C in houses. It hasn't really been much of a problem in the past because we rarely get the prolonged periods of heat that you might get in Oklahoma (in the same way we rarely get the prolonged periods of intense cold in the winter).

The past few years, though, it has seemed to get hotter and drier for longer in the summer, with occasional very heavy rain storms, instead of the more regular, gentle rain you would expect.

Ho hum.

For most of the year over here we need central heating rather than A/C. A/C would be used for maybe two, in a hot year three, weeks spread in a random way over late May to early September. It's not worth the money and hassle for that short a time.

If there ever comes a day for a Caddyman present, I know what I'm going to buy you. A colonial/ 50's style fan, preferably one for the ceiling, that goes 'whup...whup...whup...' really slowly. Added features will include a concealed radio that plays Jim Morrison whenever the temperature hits the 30s.

How come no-one makes these things?

...if I'm not shot by some crack-head veteran creeping into my room muttering,
'The horror, the horror.'

Come to think of it, sounds like a couple of dates I went on back in the 80's.

You know that nicotine is a stimulant, right?

Ah, but the psychological effects outweigh that.

About 6 hours all told, I think. Though I did wake up briefly a couple of times between 4 and 6 am. The first time because it was daylight and I was cold, having lost all the bed clothes, and the second time because it was light and I was ntoo hot, having retrioeved the bed clothes.

Just can't win. ;-)
