You, Dear Friend, being my only reader, will remember that I occasionally suffer from bouts of insomnia. Nothing too traumatic, though I confess that I fail to appreciate that when it happens.

Today at work I accidentally started an experiment which, once I realised what was going on, I continued deliberately. During the morning I drank my strong coffee as usual, but just after lunch, I accidentally switched to decaff by dint of not paying attention to what I was doing. Once it did sink in, I decided to continue with it, and eschew any caffeine until tomorrow morning. There were a couple of quite astounding yawns after four o'clock - and by astounding, I mean real jaw dislocators, but no other obvious side effects (I have been known to start dozing when filled to the gills with caffeine).

Once I got home tonight, I came up and fiddled with the computer for a while and then put the radio on to listen to the football commentary on Radio 5 Live. In the event, I didn't hear much of it, and dozed off, missing the first 10 minutes or so of Medical Investigation on Five, and forgot to put a tape in for Life on Mars. Oh well, never mind.

Anyway, I went downstairs and put the oven on for some dinner, and then in to watch the rest of Medical Investigation followed by Prison Break or whatever it is called.

Somehow in this period, without giving it much conscious thought, I found that I had quaffed two largish mugs of strong coffee. And mighty fine they were, too.

But now, at just before five to midnight, I have my headphones on, and am grooving1 to Feng Shui by the Ozric Tentacles with no obvious sign of tiredness.

I may have erred...

You drink Coffee at this time of night no wonder you don't keep regular hours !

I won't sleep tonight - but that's because I've just watched supernatural up here in the studio in the dark and scared the bejesus out of myself......

If I awake to find a gaunt woman in white in the corner - I will either have got EXTREMELY lucky !....or more likely as not will be about to explode into flame.

Given my luck recently I'd better have a bucket of water standing by......

I watched Supernatural last night on E4 (or whichever channel). I didn't think it was that scary, to be honest. One of my friends pointed out that all it really needs is two women, one brainy, wearing glasses, the other tall blonde and beautiful. It needs a dog, too.

Well I 'half' watched it from the studio (I was at the PC with the TV on outside) saw just enough to scare me and not enought to actually work out what was going on....

Off to bed now.

...."Take me home" still ringing in ears !

Actaully I think it scared me by association as it reminded me of that scene from Event Horizon where Sam Neil (Dr Weir) see his dead wife in the ships computer room.

Eek shan't sleep now.....

Why not just drink decaff all the time - as long as you go for some quality coffees it's actually rather good? (Actually, that said, drinking the so-called coffee out of the machine at work it makes no difference which one you select, they're all as bad as each other.) If you're drinking filter/ground stuff, look for the beans that have been Swiss-water decaf'd as it's a more natural process that doesn't use all the icky chemicals.

I recommend the Clipper organic stuff - both caff and decaff are great.

Yes, they are aren't they. Don't know whether you're into hot chocolate or not, but if you are and are feeling the urge to be mildly healthier than hitting the Cadbury's with milk, the Clipper instant hot choc is actually rather fine (especially for an instant) disolving the powder in just a little milk before adding the hot water. Guess where I get my sugar fix these days!
