I have decided, apropos nothing, that Lynyrd Skynyrd's Freebird is one of the ten greatest rock songs of all time. Not as good as Starless by King Crimson, but pretty damned good.

I think that sometime over the next few weeks I shall give some deep thought to this, and create my top ten all-time rock list. Doubtless it will be immediately out of date, but hey, that's the nature of the beast. Trouble is, I'm already wondering in what order to place Tales of Great Ulysses, Strange Brew and Badge by Cream, and whether all or any deserve to be in the top ten.

I may have bitten off more than I can chew, here.

Ooh. Musical snobbery from someone not [livejournal.com profile] telemeister ;-)

I'm not a great fan of Lynyrd Skynyrd, I have a 'best of' album on my Walkman, and that's about it. But I do like Freebird and to a lesser extent Sweet Home Alabama. The ones everyone likes.

You impudent little bugger - um, big bugger!

Freebird is a great song, full of musical tension, lyrically naff (your friend summed it up as a lame "hey, it's a guy thing and I'm a jerk" shoulder shrug). It's just that one has heard the thing so many bloody times, especially here in the land of Classic Rock Radio.

And Ribble, I must thwack you soundly for turning your nose up at bar bands. I've been in a couple myself, and on at least one occasion, some utter cretins called out "play Freebird". Many utterly brilliant bands are/were bar bands. The Beatles, AC/DC, the Rolling Stones, Guns & Roses, Van Halen, Dr Feelgood and MANY punk bands come to mind, and they have concocted many great songs, and some of them have changed the world. We can't all go from bedroom to arena, you know.

Ha! I'm trying to imagine any King Crimson line-up playing in a bar.

Not the full line up at any point, but I believe several of the ProjeKcts might...

Hey that's right, Bwy! I myself saw #2 at the House of Blues and I think my little fist even clutched a beer bottle or two that evening.
