I have just watched Walk the Line on DVD, having picked up from Woolworth's yesterday for a fiver in the bargain bins. I am not and never have been a Johnny Cash fan - I like many of his songs well enough, but like a number of artistes I find that listening to more than two of his songs in succession is a bit of a drag, even if individually I like the songs. Strange but true (I have the same problem with Ian Dury, not that the styles of music are in any way comparable).

Anyhoo, the film. I thought it was excellent. I don't know anything about June Carter and don't recall hearing anything by her except maybe as a singer on a Cash record, so I have no idea if Reese Witherspoon was worth her Oscar, though it was an undeniably good performance. Joaquim Phoenix on the other hand must surely have deserved the Oscar he never got. By the end of the movie I doubt I would have been able to tell the difference between his singing and Johnny Cash's.

I think I may dig out my Walkman and have a listen to Walk the Line and Jackson while I'm ironing a shirt for tomorrow. But no more; I wouldn't want to listen to more than two Johnny Cash songs back to back, now would I?

Yes - I saw it about a year ago I believe as my father had a copy of it knocking around the house. It is fantasic. It made me go out and buy some Cash albums.

It is a great film ... but I was under the impression that the singing was dubbed ... certainly Reese had a few moments near the start of unhidden mistimed lipsynching.

I bought a Jonny Cash album off the back of it ... his later covers of popular musical songs (Soundgarden, U2, Depeche Mode, Nine Inch Nails) are almost without exception, better than the originals.

No, the both of them performed their own vocals - and Phoenix lernt to play guitar for the part, too!

We saw it a couple of weeks ago, as one of our Amazon DVDs. Really, really impressive film, especially because it pulled no punches about what a mean son of a bitch he was for a large part of his life. Given that it was based on his autobiography as far as I'm aware, that took a lot of courage to write.

I hope he got to see it before he died. It's a fitting monument to him.

Sadly the movie was released a full two years after both Johnny Cash and June Carter died.

I read somewhere that Joaquim Phoenix was Cash's choice. Also, and almost unrelated, Nick Lowe married June Carter's daughter Carlene.
