Walter "Matt" Jefferies, the art director who designed the original Enterprise vessel for the first Star Trek series has died, the official website of the sci-fi series has announced.

It's hard to think of an icon from any TV show which is as immediately recognisable as the USS Enterprise (the '60s TV Batmobile, perhaps?). Recognisable that is to the extent that even non fans of the series know what they are looking at when they see it, and which is so iconic in popular culture that new technological advances are almost routinely compared to it.
I presume that even the notoriously untouched by pop-culture
nyarbaggytep has heard of it, it's that well known.
