>initiate sarcasm:< The journey home tonight was a joy. There were very few people on the platform and the train pulled in and stopped just as I walked to my customary spot. I got in and found a seat straight off. I sat down and started reading my book, for once having enough elbow room for comfort. Ten minutes or so into the journey it suddenly occurred to me just how cool and well-ventilated the carriage was, and how fresh smelling. The entire journey, including the walk at either end took an unprecedented 35 minutes and I arrived home fresh, cool and happy....>/end sarcasm mode<

Someone went under a train at Finchley Central. All trains for High Barnet terminated at Archway or were diverted to Golders Green. I was diverted to Golders Green. The buses were full and did not stop. I waited close on an hour before managing to get on one. I had to stand precariously on the upper deck for about 2/3 the journey to North Finchley and then wait for another bus. Fourteen miles from Victoria to Whetstone, 21/2 hours' travel time.
