I have read them and I've enjoyed the film but there really isn't anything that great about the books, they are unnesessarily long and a bit dull in parts, the later books are a bit better written too.
But at their core there's a good story, with 3D charachers and just enough plots twists to keep you interested.
As kids books go I far prefered the Chronicles of Narnia and Susan Coopers Dark is Rising Sequence (5 books) which is just as epic as Harry Potter and the Tomes of Inderminability and set in the real world ! in North Wales around the Cadir Idris and coastal towns if I remember rightly....
I can also claim purity. Well, almost: I have seen a couple of the movies (one involuntarily on a plane), and did play in a demo for the RPG that Rowling nixed.
