Please to explain how Al Gore has managed to wangle a Nobel Peace Prize (and indeed, an Oscar)?

I suppose it is because there would be too much opposition to awarding him one of the Nobel science prizes on account of his well-meaning but inaccurate movie, An Inconvenient Truth.

The problem, to my mind, is that this is the sort of thing: major inaccuracies in a film that should spark debate on an important subject is actually counter productive. We have, by US standards, a left wing politician with possible ambitions on the White House, pedalling a worthy, if "right-on" message that big business would probably like to ignore. He has ham-fistedly taken a global issue and placed it in the centre of US party politics, when it could have been placed above sectarian posturing. He has riddled his own propaganda with scientific sensationalism and inconsistencies and given the very people it is aimed at the space to dismiss the problem and avoid working to a solution.

Would Jed Bartlett have made such a mistake? He had better scriptwriters, methinks.

NO! he wouldn't. Leo would never have allowed it, Toby would have talked it to death Josh would have analysed it and then listened to Donna and CJ would have thrown it out as a thing to be buried under louder news.

I was told by an American friend that there were people who thought that Martin Sheen should run for president on the strength of The West Wing. So those people don't know what a crusading agitator he really is do they? The producer of TWW once said in an interview that they scheduled the shooting around Martin's arrests because he was protesting something and had been taken into custody. Good Man I'd vote for him!

There are people in England who think David Eick should run for office -- that doesn't mean most people there think that. ;)

Look hard enough and you can find any opinion, anywhere. Besides, we already have an actor running for office - Fred Thompson of Law & Order.

The ruling right wing in my country still insists there's no such thing as climate change, or global warming, and even if there was, there's nothing we can or should do about it.

Remember Kyoto?

Speaking for myself, I'm perfectly OK with Mr. Gore pushing this into the public arena.

"The Real Inconvenient Truths," Regnery, to be published next spring or summer. It's taking up all my waking hours at the moment, as the deadline is very short...
