There is a strange calm here in the office since we emailed the world with the news that the Determination would be delayed until the New Year. I have some work to do, but feel strangely disinclined to do it. I think I might indulge myself today and then bite the bullet and get on with it all on Monday. I can always blame the Monster for creating this unnatural fallow period in what should be our busiest time of year.

This sudden flood of free time at work leaves me with the freedom to ponder various possibilities for filling up the day in an interesting fashion. The first thing (perhaps the only thing) that springs to mind is that today is 9 November and therefore the day that the iPhone is launched in the UK. Now I have no interest in obtaining one1, but it seems that there are people out there who long for anything and everything that Apple churn out, regardless of price.

Anyway, to focus: there is an O2 shop on Victoria Street. There is also a Carphone Warehouse (and another around the corner). If the news media are to be believed (and who doesn’t believe them implicitly?), people are and have been queuing as if this was another Harry Potter, so that they can get a hold of one at 6.02pm this evening when they finally go on sale. Standing in line for over 30 hours in some cases, it seems – outside the Apple store in Regent Street for instance, just to pay £269 on top of a more expensive than usual 18 month minimum contract.

I may saunter along the street at lunchtime to see who these spods are; we all have our enthusiasms, but mine don’t extend to queuing in the cold and rain for anything I can’t eat or drink.

1To clarify: I have no interest in spending money on one, when I can get a FREE upgrade in due course and obtain a phone that meets my requirements for nowt.

...the day before we all celebrate the birth of Twine. There will be jollity, on pain of death!

Did I really just describe our social circles as sane.. I must be getting old.

I like to think of the mob as 'differently engaged'.

I hate the way Apple are fetishising tech more than it already is.

I think you are being overly generous there (or you have just disowned a chunk of your social circle).

I've got an apple here on my desk ..but I shall eat it in a moment.

Generally speaking phones disinterest me.
I have one but I don't know what it is, and I don't even know it's number.

Phones 4 U.
Now, their telly ads are full of...'interesting' people.

I am with you on this, old chap. As one of the few people this side of Neptune who are not enthralled with/by their smellphone, I have one but don't know its number, don't often have it switched on and only two people ever call me on it, so they must usually leave a message, trusting that I'll switch it on within the next couple of days and hear them.

When the iPhones first appeared here, a few months ago, people did line up for a few days to be first in line, only to find that the daft gadgets had some glitchy problems. As with video games, I prefer to wait at least a year until teething troubles are resolved and they are reduced in price, and then I buy one.

I'm a Luddite and I am proud....

My fovorite two questions of people who thrust shiny new mobiles under my nose used to be A) can you start a fire with it, to make a brew? B) can it tell you which way is north...

Sadly these days, I believe there are mobiles with GPS and tracking devices.......but I have yet to find one that aids in any way with obtaining a decent cup of tea !!

Of course in a survival situation you could always use a mobile to club a squirrel to death.......

Or at a push ......phone for help I guess.

I'll get my coat......

1 turn on phone;
2 look up contact list, or enter number from memory;
3 press 'send', 'dial' or the green telephone symbol, depending upon make of phone;
4 When answered by recipient, say "Hello, Mum! Put the kettle on!"

. Fortunately we move in saner circles...

We are NOT insane! it's the rest of the world that's out of step (except for Rusil who lives two steps sideways from reality all the time)
