I am beginning to wonder if The Athenaeum Club destined never to have TV reception again.

I want to phone the aerial contractors to ensure that they haven’t forgotten that they are supposed to be coming along to do the work on Saturday. Trouble is, in a morning I am not awake enough to go into the lounge and pick up the Yellow Pages and give them a call to check. So I forget. There seems little point in calling them when I get hone in an evening as that is usually later than 7.30; there will be no-one there.

Add to this low level continuing incompetence the fact that the weather forecast has possible snow and generally adverse weather forecast for tomorrow and Saturday and you have to wonder who in their right mind would wish to nip up on the roof of a three storey building in a howling gale just to fix a TV?

We don’t watch a huge amount of TV as it is transmitted and we don’t tend to record much either. Most TV entertainment comes from DVDs and torrented material not available to those without satellite, but dammit, just vegging in front of the telly sometimes is nice.

Add to that the fact that torrents are unreliable – I have last night’s Torchwood but Monday night’s City of Vice hasn’t made an appearance on any of the torrent sites I frequent (clearly I am the only demand for it) and the odd other programme has failed to make the torrents too, so it would be nice to be able just to watch the brute. Especially as I am paying the bloody TV licence.

The first precursor of this weekend’s poor weather arrived this lunchtime, persuading me against wandering off down Victoria Street to book an appointment for an eye test. I think I shall do that this evening on the way home. No need to get soggy twice in a day after all.

Would it be worthwhile ridding yourself of your terrestrial boxes and saving yourself £120 a year or so, if you don't get the reception?

At the moment we don't even have analogue, let alone digital. Why would it save us £120, BTW?

Sadly you have to pay for a TV license if you have a TV regardless of whether you can get reception an d just watch DVDs etc.

That excuse was used successfully in court once and the Govt closed the loophole almost immediately, more than 10 years ago, now.

Oh. That's a bit of a bum, isn't it?

Hopefully we're seeing you on Saturday.... get Elle to think about where we're going!

I have thought of a place in Holborn, a place in Camden and there's a pub nr Euston we like well enough. Am still musing for other nice pubs that do food and might not be screamingly full on a Sat! There is always the wehterspoons we went on my b'day - plain but big .

What if you don't have any TVs, but watch over the PC monitor?

As [livejournal.com profile] snorkel_maiden said, you could rid yourself of a telly and a TV licence necessity. You'd need to watch everything on a PC though, might be a downside.

City of Vice is on 4OD, and is well worth the download.

City of Vice continues to intrigue me. I'm actually surprised it hasn't prompted more complaints.

I, too, wish to watch City of Vice and have had precious little luck with torrents of it. Also, we can't get 4OD over here in the U.S.
