caddyman: (athenaeum club)
[personal profile] caddyman
Well the time is nearly upon us when for all intents and purposes the Athenaeum Club ceases to exist. To maintain the conceit of an eccentric Gentlemen’s Club, you need a minimum of two eccentric gentlemen to be present and large as I am, I cannot be in two places at once, nor indeed can I pretend to be two people. That’s not eccentricity, that’s madness. I could get a stick on moustache for Furtle, but I don’t think I shall.

As of about midday tomorrow then, the Athenaeum Club will be consigned to blessed memory, though [livejournal.com profile] ellefurtle and I shall continue to haunt its dusty corridors until sometime in July at the very latest (I must check the lease) and then move on to somewhere smaller and more affordable.

Although the end has been sometime in coming, [livejournal.com profile] colonel_maxim has gone through many hoops over several months since applying and being accepted for his new job out there bringing justice to Johnny Taliban, it is only now, finally , that it seems real. The flat has been the scene of much sorting, discarding and packing over the past few weeks and the removal of books and things from the shelves has proceeded at a slow enough pace to allow us to get used to the denudation of the décor by stages so that the living room (principally) didn’t look too bare. There has been an accumulation of boxes and trunks that have appeared, moved and hidden in various corners, adding an artificial sense of vibrancy to what is, essentially, an ending.

Not now, though. As of last night the trunks, boxes and sundry items of furniture have been packed and removed. Some are on their way to storage; others are already on their way to Afghanistan. The walls in the living room are bare and I think I shall, for the last couple of months of our occupancy, finally get to display a couple or three of my antique maps to break up the monotony of the walls.

I got home too late top help with the lugging of items last night, but [livejournal.com profile] colonel_maxim, [livejournal.com profile] thalinoviel, [livejournal.com profile] ellefurtle and I disappeared off for an Italian meal by way of closing things off with a valedictory feed.

Tonight we have the quiz night – perhaps not quite the last that the Athenaeum Club will attend en masse since there is every possibility that The Colonel will be back for a visit in six weeks or so - and we shall destroy the £25 bar tab we won decisively last week.

I have tomorrow off to burn up some of my accumulated leave before the end of the month. I think we shall go for breakfast at the local café and then, once he has driven off to the airport, I shall take the opportunity to ransack the remnants of the Colonel’s property in the (probably forlorn) hope of making a quick buck.

Surely if Elle took up pipe-smoking, put on a ludicrous fake moustache and started wearing a deerstalker the illusion could be maintained ?

I suspect that you are correct, though in my bones I feel that might be just a little too weird...

Elementary my dear Furtle. Then with Bryan as your Watson you could solve North London Crime!

If it is all right with you, the phantom of the Boot will not leave the Tower quite yet...the room I stay in still needs lots of cleaning up, and the colonel has kindly allowed me to look after his pc, so I will be bobbing backwards and forwards shifting stuff from a to b. So I hope to see you again long before the club finally empties forever...

Of course you're still welcome!

Just let us know when you are likely to be around as I don't fancy tippy-toeing around the flat in the dead of night with a candlestick in my hand because I heard an unexpected noise!

I have stood less than two feet away from you at your side in bright light and you still didn't see me! Am at once flattered and alarmed by my inadvertant stealth powers - will be using the portal between Monday 21st and Wednesday 23rd, and again between the 26th (on which day I hope to move the colonel's pc) and the 28th. After that, I will let you know as soon asap.
