caddyman: (Carpathia)

I am looking to get some kind of aerial rigged on the Carpathia as I am beginning to suffer from random TV show withdrawal. It's not too bad at the moment, but there are times when I plonk myself in front of the telly that some mindless fare is called for and I can't frankly be arsed to put a DVD on.

To this end, I have been looking at the possibility of just getting Freesat and not bothering with a traditional aerial. Curry's Digital in Victoria quoted me £80 for the digibox, dish and installation. This seems rather too good to be true, as I paid £150 at the Athenaeum just to get a bloke on the roof and rewire an existing standard aerial.

Does anyone have any useful knowledge in this area, or is Freesat still too new for a bedrock of knowledge and folk lore to have been laid down?

We have a portable aerial on top of our telly. It works like a treat. Although we do live next to an enormous TV transmitter, which might help. Works with the digibox too.

Our indoor aerial allows us to watch coloured static. Of course, if I stand on one leg and point the aerial out of the window, I can upgrade it to severe ghosting, rolling AND static.

I guess we must be lucky.

Not so lucky because we can't get cable. But also silly because we have a proper aerial, we just don't want another unsightly cable running across our lovely victorian fireplace. Yes, we are sad.

That's not bad really, about what I'd expect to pay. YOu can get your own kit for not much (I think I saw one for about 40-50 in B&Q lately), and installing it is a hassle though not _difficult_

This is a fairly useful write-up of the immediate future of freesat - http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2008/06/27/hdtv_in_the_uk/
