I hear you
Thursday, June 11th, 2009 12:45 amIt seems that my ears are better than even I knew. I have been aware for years that I can hear very quiet sounds and I really don't like loud ones - although I like a modicum of 'oomph' when I am listening to a goodly dose of rock music.
Anyway, I found a free application for the iPhone called 'stealth'. The idea is that it emits a high-pitched tone that will act as an insect deterent and, by the by, a teenager repellant. People younger than 20 tend to have more accute hearing than older people. For most of us, the sound is simply beyond the range of normal hearing. Naively I thought that this would be a wheeze for those occasional times when there are pesky kids around and I want some peace and quiet.
There is, however, a simple problem.
I can hear it. It's very good; it sets my teeth on edge and I would leave if I couldn't turn it off. I am 50 for God's sake: my ears should have given up on that frequency around 30 years ago. I shall try it again in a more cluttered aural environment, but I have a feeling that Yours Truly will not be dropping any stealth grenades1 anytime soon.
1Is it me or does that sound like a euphemism?

Date: 2009-06-11 01:42 am (UTC)It is a euphemism, for a silent but deadly fart that you "crop dust" while walking past someone so they don't detect it for a few seconds and can not pin on you.

Date: 2009-06-11 08:26 pm (UTC)The bomb squad was scrambled from Hereford and a few houses evacuated. This happened about three weeks ago and was reported in our local paper "The South Wales Argus"
Somefield is on the opposite bank of the Monnow to Vauxhall Fields where the RMRE were encamped for part of WW2 and held training camps there until quite recently - the Monmouth Show was held there every year until three years ago too.
