I was noodling about on the web last night, looking for something else on the Internet Movie Database, when I happened upon this little nugget, due to be released on 25 June and hit the bargain bins by lunchtime:

It’s not as you might imagine, produced by The Asylum, but like Hammer before them, they have clearly spawned imitators. The movie has been produced for SyFy in the US and I am hopeful that it will be a worthy addition to the schlock-shark genre pioneered by Jaws 3 and 4, then taken to another level by Deep Blue Sea and then perfected by Sharktopus and Mega Shark v Giant Octopus.

As it stars Kristy Swanson, I wonder what the odds are that it will bomb (high) and then lead to a successful TV series (low)..?

Wasn't she in 'The Phantom' which I believe (without the slightest whiff of irony) to be one of the most fun of all superhero films ?

I don't recall ever seeing that movie, but according to IMDB your memory is flawless!

You should, I'm sure you'd love it, pure 30's pulp where a man can wear purple spandex without being laughed at, let me tempt you by saying it features:

Animal sidekicks !
Chinese pirates !
Treat Williams playing a thinly veiled Howard Hughes and chewing the walls !
An all female sir circus !
Said Air Circus in their 1930's undies and flying helmets !
The best intro exposition in a film ever !
Pat McGoohan in one of his later roles as a ghost !
A GIANT CAVE SHAPED LIKE A SKULL !

I mean, what's not to like ? OK there are no Nazis or dinosaurs but you can't have everything...

I have to say that I find your reasoning compelling, though I'm not sure that I would want to spend a lot of money to get a copy! :-D

Oh and I forgot, the villains name is Xander Drax, you see that's TWO x's in one name just to show you how EVIL he is.

I absolutely need a copy of that film. My fav. hero besides the obvious Modesty Blaise was The Phantom and after reading your review, I now know, what I have so far missed.

I know nothing of the original strip other than that it existed so as a fan you may feel differently but I liked The Phantom film because it was unashamedly high-adventure with no hiding behind irony or trying to be 'mature' and morally grey it was just saturday-morning pictures-style fun and made me smile a lot.

Also credit must be give to Billy Zane for having the guts to wear an all over purple spandexleotard apparently without resorting to under suit muscle padding to fill it out.

I always loved the iconic Hero (his horse) thing about The Phantom (lasting skull ring marks on faces of Evil Enemies) ring but I must insist, his wife (yes wife ... imagine a superhero who is married; with two kids) was definitely a brunette and also his leotard was royal blue not at all purple, pft. These things are important. His hiphop undies, however, were striped in redandblack. I hope they got that one right since size is, after all, all.

We mock the film, not the concept, Ms Onionz.
