I have come to an accommodation with my new glasses.

They sit on my desk just behind my keyboard, and we glare balefully at each other at regular intervals.

I got real glasses for the first time a week ago too. Before that it was just cheap reading glasses. They do take time getting used to!

These are for reading only, so I have to keep taking them off. I could do with the focal length being just a little longer so that looking at the computer screen (at work - it's not so bad at home) is less of an irritant!

Ah yes, just the reason I went for varifocals. The pair I picked up last week were varifocals because I found reading glasses were fine for just reading a book but useless for doing my work or playing games or whatever.
I presume you are long-sighted but really need mid-range glasses for the computer?
Varifocals take a little getting used to, though.

Apparently I have 20-20 vision over a distance (which I take to mean anything over a yard) I can read normal letters (12 font)at about 4 feet and less, but although I can read normally at about a foot to 18 inches, I feel my eyes getting tired, especially if it's small print.

That's what the glasses are supposed to be for.

Unfortunately, it's just easier and far, far less trouble to do without them unless I am reading the newspaper or a book with (very) small print. I am beginning to feel a little ripped off by Specsavers; I'm less and less convinced that I have the right prescription (they seem far stronger than I need), or if it is correct, it is essentially pointless except when my eyes are very tired.

Specsavers should redo your eyetest and check that the specs match it - it is no use doing just one of these, you need both. However, give them another week of use before going back.

Ideally you can get to the point where they are trained-up enough to be left on the desk by themselves to look at spreadsheets while you nip off for a pint and a fag.

And specs on the desk is a less-stale decoy than a jacket on the back of the chair!
