Today is notable for two things: firstly it is my first working day of 2008; my fortnight’s Christmas and New Year holiday has evaporated like ice in the Sahara. Secondly, it is the first day of Furtle’s and my attempt to lose weight and get if not fitter, at least healthier.

The first order of business on the health front was to have a “proper” breakfast this morning and not buy sandwiches when I got to the office. So that was a coffee as usual, a bowl of cornflakes – must remember to get some sugar to sprinkle on it (not a lot, just a small sprinkle) and a banana. That was great at the time (or would have been with just a bit of sugar on the cornflakes), but I have been hungry ever since. I expect that I shall have eaten my computer by the time lunch time comes around.

I have bought some apples and bananas for this week’s lunches. I hope they work; I am not a great fan of fruit. I like the idea better than the reality. I can eat an apple, enjoy it and not feel the need for another for the next ten years. Bananas are a little different in that respect as I can happily eat them more frequently. Other fruits leave me cold: I like raspberries, but usually as an adjunct to something else. Ditto strawberries. Grapes are pretty much tasteless and unsatisfying, cherries more so. Pears are OK, but come under the same category as apples except that once every 15 years is quite sufficient. Oranges are good for juice.

Let’s face it, fruit and vegetables are dreary. Even the ones I like, I don’t like enough to eat them in quantity or on their own. I can see that this is going to take some effort and will power.

I can’t see me ditching the snus anytime soon. I don’t drink much and I’ve not smoked since the beginning of May. I need one vice, especially if I am going to do without most of the food I like.

Nope, but thanks for the heads up - I reckon I shall be able to find it online.

I agree with you about most fruit. The only stuff that I really like eating is exotic, expensive and impractical, like mango. Impossible to eat politely.

Though I am at the moment forcing myself to eat an apple a day as I really can't stand bananananas.

While it's not to everyone's taste, it might be worth you trying some vegetarian protein instead of meat in cooking- if it's cooked well with lots of flavour it's tasty with a small fraction of the fat content of meat. Like quorn curry, or chilli with soy mince.

Still hungry!

I only want to shrink enough so I can button up my leather jacket and breathe at the same time. I suspect that means about 3" off the tum, which probably in turn means loads of weight off.

I shall have a word with Furtle about this quorn malarkey. It's a joint effort after all.

Grumble.

The trick is to let things sit to absorb flavour- if you can make them 24 hours in advance they're far far tastier.

Personally I find the best kind of diet is one that I don't hate too much, as if I tried to live on fruit and veg for lunch not only would it cost me a fortune, but it would piss me off right royally. However, I have found a diet that allows me to eat olives, crabsticks and cherry tomatoes for lunch when I am dieting at my hardest, and that suits me fine.

I hope you're not relying on bananas and apples alone to get you through the day? Couldn't cope with that level of change...

I watched that programme called one ton mom - and decided right then and there that I am going to lose weight and NEVER put it back on no matter if my system is screaming for sugar in any form. Oh dear G-D! it was the most terrifying thing I have ever seen. and the worst part was the fact that the woman had the operation to reduce her stomach and died two weeks later of a heart attack.
It scared the bejazus out of me that's for sure.

I meant to say that quorn is delicious when used in bolognese sauce, in casserols, the fillets are nice too, someof the burger thingies are overrated the chunks are good in curries and such or in stir-fry where you use an oil spray to coat the wok.
As I seem to have developed an allergy to meat - my hands tingle and my skin itches if I eat poultry, pork or beef. I have been turning more to quorn as a good substitute.
