I don't know why...

... but for some reason on my PC, LJ has stopped displaying my friends' names against their posts, unless they have no icon.

This makes it rather hard to recognise some of you immediately, with your many icons. It's all very odd.

Chilean Miners

We have just spent a half hour or so watching the live feed of the Chilean miners' rescue on BBC News.

I have to say, that whatever the longer term fallout concerning the state of the mining industry over there - and I am sure there will be some: I seem to recall there being a report that for the hundreds of mines in the country, there were/are only two full time inspectors (happy to be corrected on that) - Chile seems to be acquitting itself very well in this particular crisis. Watching the recorded pictures of the first miner coming up was quite emotional. By the time the ninth miner came up and we were watching it live, it was noticeable that everyone was rather more calm and stoic.

Just in case you thought that telly was only watched by geeks and not made by them, particularly SF and other genre telly, well think again.

Trolling around on the Battlestar Wiki, we discover a number of on-screen homages to other programmes. They are all listed behind the link, but here's a couple to be going on with behind the cut: )

Downloading the latest patch for Warcrack is proving problematic.

The download gets pretty much all the way along to 100%, but before it can unpack the low disk space error message pops up and recommends deleting files to make space. The process aborts at that point and will go no father. A check by Windoze reports, on the contrary, that all disks have vast amounts of unused space. We have run virus scans and now a disk clean-up application is running (though you would never know, for the amount of progress that we're having). There appear to be no viruses present, though the PC does seem to run slowly at times.

Any ideas, Oh Lazyweb? Purleeese?
