Third World London
Tuesday, December 21st, 2010 11:25 amGreetings from Third World London, the place where a dusting of snow brings Europe’s busiest airport to a grinding halt over three days after it fell. It is the city where trains are incapable of running during the thaw after about 4” of snow.
Today, despite the snow clearly melting, East Anglia Trains were no more capable of running a service this morning than they were yesterday morning or last night when the temperatures were clearly sub zero and frozen points and the such like were a credible reason.
So for two days it has been a case of taking the bus out to Gant’s Hill, catching the Central Line to Stratford, changing to the Jubilee and then into town. Today that little escapade took longer than it did yesterday when the weather truly was cold.
The problem is that people are using the weather to mask incompetence and we have got so used to it that we accept it.
This morning, it took me just under two hours to cover the 16 miles door to door. That is a suitably Dickensian and thus seasonal pace, I guess. Oh well. Just tomorrow and then I am off until the New Year.
