From the BBC News website: Children's author Eoin Colfer has been commissioned to write a sixth instalment of the Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy series.

Now Adams's widow, Jane Belson, has given her approval to bring back the hapless Arthur Dent in a new book entitled And Another Thing...

Edited to add: I wasn't going to fill out my own poll, but I got fed up with having to tunnel down the links to see how things were turning out.

Whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy?!

Seriously what's the point - the odds of it being as good as, or indeed in keeping with, the originals are not great.

Who is this Eoin Colfer bloke and why select a children's author ?

Dirk Maggs follow up to the original Radio 4 series sadly fell short of the original IMHO - I can see this venture doing the same.

Less a case of 'Don't Panic' and more a case of 'Don't Care'.

(Good grief I sound like a miserable git)

I have to say, that's my opinion of the books in general - Dirk Gently had more going for it (aside from possibly being voiced by Harry Enfield).

Would I be right in thinking that you're not a fan of the idea?

Don't get me wrong I LOVE the Hitchhikers Guide, I am HUGE fan of the Radio show and nearly 20 years on I still know more of the script off by heart than could be considered healthy !

The later books, and the 2005 series just simply fell short of the humour and quality of the earlier books and 80's radio series.

Ah, I meant the idea of getting someone else in to write another book.
From the article on the Today site - Adams himself said: "I suspect at some point in the future I will write a sixth Hitchhiker book…I would love to finish Hitchhiker on a slightly more upbeat note. Five seems to be a wrong kind of number, six is a better kind of number."
Now it seems Adams' wish has come true
.
Er, not quite - unless Coifer is channelling the spirit of Adams from beyond the grave (which would be entertaining what with Adams's atheism).

Was that the sound of a monocle dropping into a brandy?

It was. I also puffed out my handlebar moustache and struck the fender with my Zulu knobkerrie.

Why? the answer can only be money and not because it is right for the story or the legacy of Dougals Adams work, and therefore it shouldn't really be done, its like someone doing knock off David's because its what Leonardo would have wanted.

Whatever is created now is crass imitation

I should probably type this in Greekly small type but I am interested to see what Colfer does with the idea.

I actually like Eoin Colfer's childrens books, but I'm not convinced he is a hoopy frood or that he should be writing Hitchhikers. I fear a travesty, or that it will simply be Something Else. And if you're going to write Something Else I think it should actually be something else and not pretend to be Hitchhikers.

His earlier books were good (Eoin) but kind of continued on in that never ending inevitability so we stopped reading them. He's probably as good as anyone to do it, but I don't see why they've bothered, wouldn't it have been better to wait another 28 years until they were about to lose the copyright or something?
