Last night the Athenaeum Club sat down to watch Serenity since yours truly cracked and shelled out the necessary shekels at HMV instead of getting it cheaper from Play.com or somewhere similar. Still, it’s only a couple of quid price difference.

I was rather surprised by how much darker the movie is compared with Firefly. There was still some throwaway humour, but by and large that got pushed to one side in favour of the action. It was also interesting that while it had been written so that it can be watched by the casual viewer with no knowledge of the TV series, some knowledge of the show is essential to understand the character of the captain, Mal. Taking Serenity in isolation he comes across far more driven by his dislike for the Alliance, much more focussed and very humourless (which is not to say that he doesn’t have his moments).

I liked the TV show better, and might have to watch it again quite soon to see if my view of the movie is confirmed.

TV show is indeed best. Hmmm I might be due a third viewing! On the other hand I have: My Name is Earl, Prison Break, Lost, Scrubs and Desperate Housewives to see too.....

All of which are more interesting than work

That sounds quite accurate; I would say that the film works on a greater level if you have seen the series, otherwise the impact of events on the characters is greatly reduced.

I got the impression that Mal was just trying to hold together a fragmenting ship, his were the actions of someone good pushed into a desperate situation.

Ah, the famous gravity photo. See, that's what I mean when I say that I have to wait for gravity to drag my face back down when I wake up.

Yikes! I have seen that face before. I got a disconcerting bout of deja vu when the memory flooded back of you looking EXACTLY like that during chemistry lessons. Still, I was the same during history, geography, maths... Thank you, Bwy, for not awakening me with a compass in the buttock at those times.

The TV show is better, the film does some things that really break the spirit of the programme and what Mr. W kept saying he wanted to do with it.
Plus Mr Universe in an awful plot device and far too 'Buffyesque' for my likeing. Still an OK film though.
