Serenity

Last night the Athenaeum Club sat down to watch Serenity since yours truly cracked and shelled out the necessary shekels at HMV instead of getting it cheaper from Play.com or somewhere similar. Still, it’s only a couple of quid price difference.

I was rather surprised by how much darker the movie is compared with Firefly. There was still some throwaway humour, but by and large that got pushed to one side in favour of the action. It was also interesting that while it had been written so that it can be watched by the casual viewer with no knowledge of the TV series, some knowledge of the show is essential to understand the character of the captain, Mal. Taking Serenity in isolation he comes across far more driven by his dislike for the Alliance, much more focussed and very humourless (which is not to say that he doesn’t have his moments).

I liked the TV show better, and might have to watch it again quite soon to see if my view of the movie is confirmed.

Well, only about two-and-a-half years late, we sat down and watched the pilot episode of Firefly on DVD courtesy [livejournal.com profile] bytepilot.

A good start, I think. Enjoyable bit of Traveller for the TV, Joss Whedon's hand is very evident; I look forward to the 11 (or is it 12?) remaining episodes, at which point we will have to borrow Serenity from somebody.

Got the arms (legs?) -hooky things that go round your ears- lengthened on my specs today. Only about a half centimetre, but they're much better. They no longer sit so close to my eyes that my eyelashes catch the lenses every time I blink. Try it to see just how annoyed you can become in a half hour. I still don't intend to wear them much (though I'm wearing them now), but at least when I do, they won't annoy the bejasus out of me.

In other news, there is no other news.
