OK, chaps and chapettes.

Time to show your age - who is your Doctor Who?

I'm guessing I know the answer already.

i must confess

i am the one who likes Sylvester McCoy.

though, i prefer his Doctor in the books which came after the series ended. i feel that the concept didn't really get the freedom it deserved until it was let go of the reins of a television budget.

I must agree - Tom baker was the Doctor I remember watching most on TV but in the books afterwards the McCoy era doctor was better

Jon Pertwee would have been the one but when I was a kid while we were on holiday down in Portsmouth I think it was, I accidentally walked backwards into him while he was arguing with someone and he swore at me :( So Tom Baker gets my vote now.
Jellybaby?

I confess also to a strange liking for Sylvester McCoy. I don't think he got a good go at it...

I went for Sylvester McCoy too, partly cos i is too young to vote for the others, but mostly because he had the best sidekick by a long way and she was my childhood hero (along with robin of sherwood, obviously).

Was never a big fan of Doctor Who, but for sheer madcap lunacy Sylvester McCoy has to take it.

Ao - on the evidence so far, Jon Pertwee supporters either vote late at night, or get up early in the morning. Tom Baker supporters don't really start until mid-morning.

Bakers loaf around all morning, whilst the Perts are up during the wee small hours...

Do you mean the one you liked best or the face that you put to the name ?

Generally speaking it's the Doctor you grew up with that seems to get the vote, I think.

My vote is a little skewed since Dad liked to watch whaever crap was on ITV, and until we got our first colour telly in 1970 and I inherited the ancient black and white, I didn't really see much Who. So my favourite is Pertwee, though by age it should be the later Hartnell or Troughton episodes.

Of course, the fact that the US and Canada didn't get (I think) the series prior to Tom Baker, the overseas votes tend to skew the voting further.

At the time of typing this, I'm a little surprised at Sylv's showing. When I said I thought I knew in advance what the results would be, I expected the pattern you'd get if you swapped the McCoy and Davison votes.

I have a soft spot for all the Doctors, and feel that Colon Baker's portrayal was excellent, he just had shite scripts to work with.

Gotta love that frock coat, though...

Indeed; I only remember Tom Baker and John Pertwee distinctly. I think it was all in second-run syndication by the time I saw it anyway (late 80's), so the identity of the Doctor was entirely up to my local affiliate.

By age, I should be firmly in the Baker camp, but he frankly annoyed the bejeezus out of me so much that even at the tender age of 10 (IIRC) I wanted to use his scarf to attach his neck to a long drop.

Davidson's cynical nature and offhandedness struck a chord.

And Nyssa. Mmmmmmmmmmm.

well I grew up with Tom Baker I'd guess - he's certainly the earliest incarnation i clearly remember... would be Robots of Death with those scary gold faced robots chasing the Doctor and Leela around a giant sandsifter thing.
But, thanks mainly to the "New Adventures" books its leaning toward Sylvester McCoy - certainly it's him I picture annoying Sherlock Holmes greatly in "All consuming fire", or hanging around with a pseudo- Iain M Banks's Culture in "The Also People"

Not to mention...

Also "Transit" which is lodged forever in my top ten of all books. Reread value makes my tatty copy priceless.

My view of Tom Baker as the doctor has sadly been sullied recently:

1) Dead Ringers - The Doctor goes speed dating

2) The Fellowship of the Ring - nuff said.

My favorite era is that of John Pertwee, mainly due to Roger Delgado as The Master. One day all evil will be this suave :)

Er....

I'm afraid I'm going to have to do a Baggy and fail to pick up on a single one of those cultural references.
