For the first time in many, many moons, I have brought my own lunch in. It is a modified Greek Salad prepared by [livejournal.com profile] ellefurtle (ie she was making her own and took the opportunity to make a whole heap so I could have some, too). I say modified because it has pasta and sweet corn in it as well as the more usual gubbins. I shall be scarfing this back rather daintily with my spare teaspoon as I forgot to bring a fork in with me.

So, Greek salad, an apple and a banana – with the option of snacking on more banana and apple later if I get peckish in the pee-em; how healthy is that?

So far I haven’t been overly strict with myself, though sarnie consumption is at an all-time low, having been replaced by breakfast cereal (Rice Krispies) and fruit. With the exception of a bag of ‘Planets’ the other night and au unexpected windfall of four or five posh choccies last night, chocolate consumption has fallen away to nothing.

Surprisingly I am finding the eating of apples and bananas to be fine. No problem at all. I am not, by nature, a great consumer of fruit. It’s OK, but one apple every five years or so is enough. A pear every decade and other fruit in cocktails. I don’t think that I am ready yet, to expand my menu past a Granny Smith or two; French Golden Delicious are neither golden nor delicious and most red apples are just compressed pellets of cotton wool.

Getting there, though.

A week and a half in, with, as I say, not being too strict, and my jacket hangs just a little looser. I doubt that it’s noticeable to anyone but me, but it’s there anyway. It will clearly take a couple or three months before there is much to notice, but with luck…

Pink Lady apples are the tastiest. And they have a funny name.

Ooh.

Never heard of them; I shall have to keep an eye out for them.

Pink Lady are good for the non-fruit fan as they are very crisp and very sweet. When they ar not in season they can be a bit wooly but when they are good they are pretty nice. They are available most of the year in most supermarkets. As a hater of cotton wool apples (and therefore previously condemned to eat the wonderfully crisp but utter flavourless Granny Smith) I recommend them.

Seconded. They are lovely, and I am not the biggest fan of apples either.

I tend to take my banana I milkshake form as I don't like the texture.

Nice one Mr Caddy and Ms Furtle come to that, take it steady. I'm with you on the fruit, unless its a banana or grapes its mostly a chore, Have ye tried; a hand whisk/blitzer thing then wang all your fruit stuff in a jug with some superdooper skimmed milk and honey and turn em into something nicerer than the way nature packs em works for me and the rugrats, I made 'purple' the other day, banana milk honey and blackberries, twas most yum.

My wife makes lovely concoctions like that. A tasty and fun way of consuming otherwise uninterestingly healthy fruit wotsits. I find pears are much more preferable than apples, as long as I'm not too far from the lav.

Grapes are nice but one must be careful, I know of a certain taxi driver who in trying to improve his diet started eating lots of grapes as a snack and found he actually put on weight ! There is a reason grapes are used for making wine, they are stuffed with sugars.

Well Done Folks ....keep it up.

Plain Rice Krispies with fruit is ok don't go for the frosted versions...work of Satan and all his little pixies and will undo your hard work.

Check out the BBC website for sound nutritional advice, it's very good.

Pink Lady Apples are very tasty but they are expensive and being American rack up the food miles. British Braeburns are currently available and are a juicy tastey alternative.

A good traditional Cox's Orange Pippin gives you crispness and a slightly sharp tang that makes the hint of orange in the flavour just wonderful. They are perfect at this time of the year - this being the traditional "season" for Cox's having picked them in October and put them onto racks in the apple store to mature.
golden delicious never had any flavour and the french just bred them bigger and bigger and extracted every last atom of taste.
You are so clever to take it slowly. Now all you have to do is find a form of exercise that you and furtle can enjoy together - yes that uses calories too - like brisk walking or cycling and you will soon be able to wear a shirt and a jumper under that jacket LOL
