Thar she blows
Tuesday, August 2nd, 2011 11:04 amHaving kind of stopped paying attention to my efforts to lose tonnage for most of the past few months, it was no surprise, but a little dismaying to find, a fortnight or so ago, that I had managed to eradicate most of the gains I made during 2010 when I was paying closer attention. I was still less bulky than at my worst, but it was, nonetheless a retrograde step.
This weekend I ventured onto the scales again to find that with relatively little sacrifice, I had managed to lose 8lbs putting back to where had been. I had guessed as much; I am now in that annoying belt stage where one notch is too tight to be entirely comfortable, the next one along too loose for confidence.
I have been aided in my attempts to shrink by the fact that the supply of unsolicited cakes and biscuits in the office has dried up. I am notoriously weak willed when faced by anything chocolaty or biscuity in the office, though over all, I am better when faced with cakes (though I really do like doughnuts and yum yums and had to maintain tight mental control a couple of days last week when someone brought supplies in twice). Annoyance with work matter and overall boredom lower my defences and I find it hard to resist.
My initial target remains modest: I just want to be able to button up my jacket comfortably. Once that is achieved, I shall set another target – successfully wear a jumper under the jacket, then be able to button the jacket over the jumper, that sort of thing. But let’s just get to the point where I can button the damned thing up over a tee shirt, shall we?
On the plus side, it already hangs much better than it did 3 or 4 years ago, when I wore it during our wander around London Zoo. It no longer looks obviously too small around where the waist ought to be.
I suppose that in the long term, I ought to aim for a silhouette that tapers in toward the waist rather than out. First things first.
